Questions We Still Have About Season 1 of "Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists"

It’s been a sad couple of days for the Pretty Little Liars fandom. On Friday, September 27, it was announced that Freeform was not renewing The Perfectionists, PLL’s spinoff series, for a second season, much to viewers’ dismay.

The Perfectionists’ 10-episode run concluded earlier this year, transporting the PLL Army across the country to the mysterious world of Beacon Heights University, where Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) and Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) went from frenemies to partners-in-crime as they tried to solve yet another murder mystery. Along the way, they found themselves immersed in the complicated lives of three students: Dylan Walker (Eli Brown), Ava Jalali (Sofia Carson), and Caitlin Park-Lewis (Sydney Park), each with secrets and a dark past of their own.

When the season finale of The Perfectionists aired back in May, fans were left with several cliffhangers — which is pretty common in the realm of PLL. But now that we’re officially not getting a season 2?! Um, we really need some answers.

Ahead, check out the burning questions we have for the Beacon Heights crew. Here’s hoping Netflix or Hulu decides to save the day, because I don’t think I can sleep until I know the identity of The Professor.

Who killed Nolan Hotchkiss?

Like its predecessor, The Perfectionists revolved around a major “whodunnit” mystery. Nolan Hotchkiss (Chris Mason), of the prestigious Hotchkiss family, was murdered towards the beginning of the season, and it seemed as though nearly everyone had a motive. During the final episode, it appeared that Jeremy Beckett (Graeme Thomas King) might have been responsible for Nolan’s death, but if there’s one thing any PLL fan knows for sure, it’s that nothing is ever as it seems.

OK, for the love of black hoodies everywhere, who is The Professor?

PLL had a knack for giving us more than one villain at once (“A” and Red Coat, for example), and it looked like The Perfectionists was headed in the same direction. The season 1 finale revealed that an all-knowing character called “The Professor” was watching the Beacon Heights students and faculty, and seemingly conducing an experiment with their lives. Definitely sounds like “A” territory to us…but who is it?!

What exactly has Dana Booker been up to?

Dana Booker was the head of Beacon Heights’s security team, and the main antagonist throughout season 1. She essentially had it out for Dylan, Ava, and Caitlin, and seemed hell-bent on pinning Nolan’s murder on one — or all — of them. But why? There was definitely more backstory there, and we’re pretty devastated that we may never learn the truth.

What was going to happen with Dylan’s high school bully, Luke?

Near the end of the first season, we found out that Dylan was bullied throughout high school over his sexuality. Then, as if things weren’t already bad enough between the murder accusations and potential expulsion, it turned out that his previous tormentor, Luke, had enrolled in Beacon Heights in order to “make things right.” Definitely seemed a little suspicious at the time.

Were Emily and Alison ever going to get back together?

Poor Emison fans waited seven years for their faves to finally give into their romantic feelings for one another, only to get divorced offscreen in The Perfectionists era. Several of Ali’s scenes gave viewers an indication that she still carried a torch for Emily, and Sasha Pieterse herself even told us that “Ali and Emily will always love each other.” So? Was there any hope left? We may never find out.

And were any of the original PLLs planning a trip to Beacon Heights?

Throughout the first season, several OG PLL cast members hinted that they would love to appear on the spinoff — or even direct an episode or two. Tyler Blackburn, who played Caleb Rivers on Pretty Little Liars, said he’d be “open” to a stint on The Perfectionists, and Lucy Hale was “totally down” to reprise her role of Aria Montgomery. Just think of all that could have been!

What other secrets was Taylor hiding?

Taylor Hotchkiss (Hayley Erin) was arguably one of the most enigmatic characters on The Perfectionists, given that she was, y’know, dead for part of the first season. But since this is a PLL show, no one ever stays dead for a long time — especially if we never see a body. Later on in the season, it was revealed that Taylor built Beacon Guard, the college town’s high-tech security surveillance system, at the age of 14. Given that information, we have to wonder: what else was she keeping to herself? What else is she capable of? We deserved to know more about this complex character!

OK if we can’t have more Perfectionists…can we please just have an entire show about Mona?

Over the course of seven seasons on PLL, Mona skyrocketed to fan-favorite status. With her high level of intelligence, sharp wit, and endlessly good fashion, she was easily a character we could watch all day. Here’s hoping we haven’t seen the last of Mona Vanderwaal — or her many, many secrets.
