While fans of Bridgerton wait for the Penelope-Featherington-and-Colin-Bridgerton-focused third season, they’re getting a royal treat to hold them over. Today, the Bridgerton spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story premiered on Netflix. The prequel series focuses on a young Charlotte as she prepares to wed King George III—and as she prepares to become the cheeky, gossip-obsessed, over-the-top queen that Bridgerton viewers know and love.

With season 2 of Bridgerton having premiered in March 2022 and now this spin-off series happening, you may be wondering what the current plans are for the Bridgerton universe. For instance, will Queen Charlotte be getting another season? Are more spin-offs in the works? Read on to find out everything we know so far.

Will Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story get a season 2?

This may come as a surprise, but as of now, it doesn’t sound like Queen Charlotte will be returning for a second season. Ever since it was announced, Queen Charlotte has been referred to as a limited series, and we now know that it consists of six episodes.

That said, shows that have been announced as limited series have turned into longer-running shows. For example, the super-popular White Lotus was initially going to be a limited series, but it became an anthology show because it was such a big hit. Basically, don’t bet on a second season, but perhaps it’s not totally out of the question.

Who stars in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story?

Queen Charlotte features the characters in the time period shown in Bridgerton but also in the past. This means that Golda Rosheuvel, Adjoa Andoh, Ruth Gemmell, and Hugh Sachs, who play Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury, Violet Bridgerton, and the queen’s secretary Brimsley in the main series, all play the same roles in the prequel.

The characters’ younger counterparts are portrayed by India Amarteifio, Arsema Thomas, Connie Jenkins-Greig, and Sam Clemmett, respectively. Other cast members include Corey Mylchreest as young King George III and Michelle Fairley as Princess Augusta.

Will there be more Bridgerton spin-offs?

No more Bridgerton spin-offs have been announced—yet—but it seems likely. Just look at the name of the show: Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. It’s easy to imagine there being other Bridgerton stories in the future.

Plus, when Queen Charlotte was announced, Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria said in a press release, “Shonda [Rhimes] and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”

See that? Building. Out. The Bridgerton. Universe. And keep in mind, producer Shonda Rhimes is the same person who brought us 19 seasons (and counting) of Grey’s Anatomy and 6 seasons of its spin-off Private Practice. She doesn’t shy away from a long-lasting franchise.

Where can I get more Queen Charlotte?

Aside from the fact that there was a real Queen Charlotte, who you can read books about—or travel down a Wikipedia rabbit hole about—there’s also a Queen Charlotte novel related to the new show.

Rhimes and Bridgerton author Julia Quinn cowrote a book based on the new spin-off, which hits shelves May 9. Convenient!

“Queen Charlotte has been such a moving character to write and now having the opportunity to work with Julia to adapt this story into a book is such an exciting opportunity,” Rhimes said when the news was announced, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “I can’t wait for fans of this universe to read the story of a character that has resonated so deeply with our audience.”

Of course, on top of that, there are the eight Bridgerton novels. (By the way, Queen Charlotte isn’t a character in these books.) That should be enough to keep you occupied until season 3 finally gets a release date.
