  • ABC's Emergence debuted this week.

  • Episode 1 introduced a number of major mysteries.

  • Here are the questions we're already wondering the answers to.

ABC debuted its new series, Emergence, this week, and while it's certainly not re-inventing the wheel, there was enough mystery and intrigue in the first episode to keep us talking—and guessing—until next week.

Behind the talented Allison Tolman (who previously starred in the first season of FX's Fargo), Emergence is hoping to lock in audiences week-in and week-out, looking for hints and ways to solve some mysteries that the show is cooking up. Even after just the first episode, there's already quite a few unanswered questions that we're looking to get to the bottom of.

As LOST showed, for better and for worse, sometimes answering these questions can become a fools errand. But with the right storytelling a teased mystery that pays off well can be everything. Emergence's showrunners previously worked on the much-heralded Marvel series Agent Carter, so there's a good chance that the show knows what it's doing.

For now, let's take a look at the mysteries that are already jumping out:

Where did Piper come from?

Clearly, something funny is going on with Piper. She appeared on the beach out of nowhere, not a scratch on her, after what appeared to be a plane crash. Did she cause this crash? Was she on-board during the crash? We know from later in the episode that she has some kind of supernatural ability, but the central mystery of the show will clearly focus on who Piper is, where she came from, and what she can do.

Who were those people impersonating her parents?

Another major mystery that the show's pilot presented was who, exactly, the people impersonating Piper's parents were. It wasn't very hard for Jo to figure out that they weren't who they said they were; clearly they were working for someone else. But who? How high does the conspiracy go!?!? We demand answers!

Who were the people impersonating the NTSB?

Again, more impersonations. Two different groups of people showed up to the crash site from the beginning of the episode, both claiming to be the NTSB. Another group claiming to be NTSB showed up to the hospital. Who's who? Are any of these people real? Gosh, my head hurts just thinking about it already.

What was that card that the fake parents had?

Clearly, the card that Jo found was troubling her. She handed it off to the investigative reporter at the end of the episode to try to dig up some dirt and figure it out. Is it a membership card to a secret society? A key to some sort of weapon or device? We'll see.

What did Piper pull from behind her ear?

This question might roll in with a moment from earlier in the episode, when Piper was drawn to some images appearing on the television. It's evident that Piper has some sort of magnetic power—the paper clip flying and sticking to the wall in the episode, and the car's flipping make that evident—but what in the world was the deal with her cutting something out from behind her ear with a box cutter?!?! Was that a tracker? Was it some sort of bug? Was it hurting her? We will certainly find out, but when, is anyone's guess.

How much is Piper not telling that she already knows?

Which brings us to our final question. If Piper knew to steal the box cutter, and knew to cut whatever-that-was out from behind her ear, she clearly knows more about who she is and where she came from than she's letting on. In the coming weeks, hopefully, we'll find out these answers. But until then, we'll just have to ponder.
