The Queen Wears as Many as Seven Different Outfits on Christmas Day

  • Queen Elizabeth changes her outfit several times every Christmas Day.

  • Her royal dresser, Angela Kelly, revealed details of the queen's festive wardrobe in new book, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser and the Wardrobe.

  • Kelly explained that the queen's outfit changes are due to having "more guests to entertain."

Unsurprisingly, Queen Elizabeth is extremely busy over the festive season.

According to Angela Kelly, who is the person responsible for helping the queen choose so many iconic outfits, on Christmas Day, "the queen is just as busy as she would be in London, with more guests to entertain." As a result, the monarch makes many outfit changes throughout the day.

Per Kelly, in her new book, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser and the Wardrobe (via People), "There may be several outfit changes in one day—it could be as many as five or even up to seven." Which, frankly, puts my one Elf sweater to shame.

A lot of planning goes into which clothes the queen will wear for the big occasion. Per Kelly, "I lay out sketches of evening dresses for the queen to look through and choose what she would like to wear that evening and, occasionally, she may have to pick out a dress for a cocktail party."

It's also Kelly's responsibility to ensure the ladies-in-waiting and attending guests don't clash with the monarch. According to Kelly, "Once Her Majesty has chosen her dress for dinner, a handwritten notice is pinned up in the Dressers’ Corridor detailing what she will be wearing, so that the Queen’s ladies’ maids can select an appropriate dress for the lady they are looking after."
