The Seventh and Final Season of “Queen Sugar” Gets a Trailer

After following their lives for six seasons, there’s a good chance that the Bordelon family of the OWN drama Queen Sugar feels a bit like your family, too. Now, get ready to say goodbye to the fictional Louisiana siblings, who came together at the start of the first season to manage their family land and have gone through so much since.

In November 2021, ahead of the season 6 finale, OWN shared that Queen Sugar would return for its seventh—and final—season in 2022. Since its premiere, the series has been lauded for its richly drawn characters and for confronting relevant issues, from racism to the Covid-19 pandemic (and their intersection). Similarly, Queen Sugar made headlines for its cadre of all-women directors, many of whom launched directing careers thanks to the show.

Creator Ava DuVernay reflected on the series’ ending in an official statement. “To everything, there is a season. And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making Queen Sugar with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television,” shared DuVernay. “To write and produce seven seasons of a modern drama centered on a Black family is a radical act in our industry and a triumph that has far exceeded every hope I held. Now I feel strongly that the story, which began as a sunrise of a suggestion from Oprah, is ready for its sunset as a dream fully realized. Queen Sugar has been one of the true joys of my career, and my gratitude is buoyant and boundless.”

As DuVernay said, the drama began through a conversation she had with Oprah. After the news broke, Oprah amplified her support for the show. “I LOVE this show so much. Thank you all for echoing that love by watching,” she tweeted.

Here's what to know about the final episodes of Queen Sugar.

Season 7 is premiering in September 2022.

Queen Sugar will return to OWN on Tuesday, September 6 at 8 p.m. ET, with a season that's expected to be 13 episodes. The announcement was shared on the show's Twitter page.

The show's full ensemble cast is expected gather one more time. Expect to see Rutina Wesley (Nova Bordelon), Dawn-Lyen Gardner (Charlotte “Charley” Bordelon West), Kofi Siriboe (Ralph Angel Bordelon), Nicholas L. Ashe (Micah West), Bianca Lawson (Darla Sutton), Tina Lifford (Violet Bordelon), Omar J. Dorsey (Hollywood Desonier), Henry G. Sanders (Prosper Denton), and Timon Kyle Durrett (Davis West).

Ethan Hutchinson, who plays Ralph Angel and Darla's son, Blue, will be in season 7 following his character's sojourn in Washington, D.C. And his life is changing again, given that Ralph Angel and Darla had a daughter in the finale.

Ava DuVernay knows how it will end.

The series creator has known the end for a while—and she'll be returning to direct the final episode. “I didn’t think about how to get to the end, I just know what the end will be. I’m excited about where it’s all going, so, as we start writing more, the adventure will be to take steps to get to the end of the journey,” DuVernay told Deadline back in 2021.

Hopefully, the plot will end on a note of joy. “Black joy looks good on this family,” Lifford told TV Line, reflecting on the happy season 6 finale, and what it means for season 7. The finale showed the Bordelon siblings expanding their families: Ralph Angel and Darla welcomed a child; Davis and Charley agree to get remarried and move to L.A.; and Nova and Dominic get together. “It can’t and won’t be all good times all the time, but this is a start.”
