  • Queen Maxima of the Netherlands recently stepped out in an eye-catching tiara.

  • As it turns out, the jewels in the tiara are rooted in Dutch royal history.

  • They were gifted to Queen Wilhelmina when she married Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1901.

Americans are often accused of being ignorant of anything beyond our shores. But that's not entirely true: when it comes to royalty, our knowledge stretches all the way to the White Cliffs of Dover.

Yes, despite the fact that our entire country is built on giving the proverbial finger to the King of England, we here in the States know a lot about the Windsor family over in the United Kingdom—from the newly crowned King Charles III to his grandchildren and even his rarely remarked-upon siblings.

But ask most of us to name any other monarch, and it will get sad fast. Odds are, most folks on the street are probably naming kings like Triton, Baratheon, and even Burger before we even get close to naming someone who's ever occupied an actual throne.

This is a shame, though, because much like what we love about the British royals, the royal families of other nations also represent a rich history of culture, conflict, and copious gifts. In fact, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands' recent outing showcased just such a historic item.

The aforementioned queen recently attended the Diplomatic Corps gala dinner at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam, and eagle-eyed fashion-watchers with a memory for Dutch history noticed a unique item in her ensemble.

Hello Magazine offered up a bit of the history attached to the eye-catching Dutch Sapphire Necklace Tiara, a wedding present that's more than a century old, worn by the queen:

"The five diamond and sapphire lozenges on the tiara came from the necklace of the 'wedding gift parure' – made up of a tiara, a necklace and two bracelets – which the people of the Netherlands gifted Queen Wilhelmina when she married Prince Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1901."

Isn't that sweet? Maybe we should shift our focus from the troubled British Royals to these guys for a bit. And unlike the Windsors, these guys probably don't have any issues with, say, royal objects of racist origins or a nebulous grasp on how much power these supposed figureheads actually wield. It's probably all smooth sailing over there for them.
