Queen Margrethe Tests Positive for COVID After Attending Queen Elizabeth's Funeral

Queen Margrethe of Denmark has tested positive for COVID-19, the Danish Royal Court confirmed. It is the second time this year the Danish queen has had coronavirus.

"HM The Queen tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday evening and is now residing at Fredensborg Palace. The Queen’s activities this week have thus been canceled," the Royal Court said in a release. "Friday’s evening event at Christiansborg Palace for the government, the Danish Parliament and the European Parliament’s Danish members will be carried out with HRH The Crown Prince and HRH The Crown Princess serving as hosts."

Queen Margrethe, 82, was one of thousands of guests who attended Queen Elizabeth's funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday. She sat next to her son, Crown Prince Frederik, and near many other European monarchs who attended—including King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and King Felipe VI of Spain.

Margrethe attended several events in London around Queen Elizabeth's funeral; she went to Westminster Hall Sunday to pay her respects, to the funeral on Monday, and later on Monday, she attended the committal service at St George's Chapel in Windsor with a more intimate group.

Upon the death of her longtime friend Queen Elizabeth, Queen Margrethe became the longest reigning queen in Europe and the only queen regnant in the world. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee the weekend right after Queen Elizabeth's death, but scaled back the celebrations and led a moment of silence for the late British monarch.

"Your mother was very important to me and my family," she wrote to King Charles III. "She was a towering figure among the European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all." The Queens were third cousins; they both trace their lineage back to Queen Victoria.
