Queen Letizia pulled out a necklace from her royal jewelry box for a Diplomatic Corps reception at the Zarzuela Palace today. Letizia first wore the necklace on the eve of her wedding to then-Prince Felipe, at a dinner at Royal Palace of El Pardo.
Queen Sofiía had gifted her soon-to-be daughter-in-law Letizia the necklace, and matching earrings, upon her engagement to Felipe. During the private engagement lunch at Zarzuela Palace, the Royal Watcher blog notes, "Queen Sofia gave to Doña Letizia a necklace and a pair of earrings made of pearls, sapphires and diamonds set in white gold. Her Majesty placed the necklace on her future daughter-in-law’s neck straight away."
It was a necklace Sofía herself was given for her wedding to King Juan Carlos back in 1962, describing it years later to Pilar Urbano in La Reina Muy de Cerca as "a necklace of blue stones, diamonds and sapphires with a hanging pearl, a teardrop." She clarified, "it was not of the Crown jewels," but did not specify who gifted her the jewels.
While Queen Letizia has worn the earrings in the years since the suite was gifted to her (most notably in 2020), but today marks the first return of her diamond, sapphire, and pearl engagement necklace in public since that night in 2004.
In a slight jewelry mishap, Queen Letizia also wore a diamond bracelet that fell off during the event, and King Felipe helped her put it back on. You can watch the sweet moment here:
