King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema are expecting baby number 3! The Bhutanese monarchs shared today that Queen Jetsun is pregnant, and due in early autumn.
"Their Majesties, The Druk Gyalpo and Gyaltsuen are happy to share the news that Her Majesty is expecting their third child, due in early autumn," read an announcement posted to the Bhutanese king's Instagram and Facebook pages. "Their Majesties wish to thank everyone for their continued good wishes and prayers."
King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema married in 2011, and welcomed their first child, Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, also called the Dragon Prince as the heir apparent, in 2016. Their second son, Prince Jigme Ugyen Wangchuck, was born in 2020.
The news means that Queen Jetsun was pregnant at two major royal occasions recently: at the royal wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Rajwa Al Saif in Amman, which she attended with her sister-in-law Princess Eeuphelma, and at the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla in London.
For both events, the Queen was pictured carrying a small clutch in front of her stomach, perhaps to prevent any speculation around her pregnancy. Following the wedding, she took her sons Prince Jigme Namgyel and Prince Jigme Ugyen sightseeing in Jordan.
The baby will be third in the line of succession to the Bhutanese throne, but if the baby is a girl, she could be bumped down by any future younger brothers. The constitution of Bhutan sets out a prince taking precedence over a princess.
