  • Queen Elizabeth II's 94th birthday celebrations have been canceled.

  • The monarch's birthday is usually celebrated with gun salutes and flag flying on April 21.

  • Trooping the Colour 2020, which traditionally takes place in June each year, has been canceled due to current social distancing measures because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As coronavirus continues to affect people worldwide, it's been announced that the queen's birthday will not be publicly commemorated in 2020.

Queen Elizabeth turns 94 on April 21, but the monarch's special day will not be marked by gun salutes, and flag flying protocol has been updated to reflect the fact that many people are currently self-isolating or social distancing.

While other members of the royal family will likely take to social media to celebrate the queen's birthday, no other public celebrations will be taking place. According to Harper's BAZAAR UK, "The [gun] salute usually takes place at Hyde Park and the Tower of London... A Buckingham Palace official confirmed that the monarch had decided it would not be appropriate at this time."

Trooping the Colour, known as the queen's second birthday celebration, has also been canceled for 2020.

Queen Elizabeth recently made a special broadcast regarding the coronavirus pandemic and said, "I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it."

The queen explained, "I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time. A time of disruption in the life of our country, a disruption that has brought grief to some and financial difficulties to others, and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all."
