Here’s Why Queen Elizabeth’s Summer Vacation Is Getting a Late Start This Year

Even monarchs need a break. Lucky for Queen Elizabeth, school’s Buckingham Palace is out for summer. The only catch? Her annual sojourn to Balmoral is delayed this year.

Her Majesty is reportedly heading to her Scottish estate, Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, later than usual in order to have a meeting with the incoming prime minister.

The Daily Mail reports that the 93-year-old monarch will not head to Balmoral (seen above) without meeting the 14th prime minister, who will be announced on Tuesday, July 23. The shift comes after Theresa May announced her resignation in late May.

But, since Buckingham Palace opens for visitors Saturday, July 20, The Daily Mail says Queen Elizabeth will head to Windsor to hold the meeting. The castle where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their nuptials is close enough to London that the queen can call upon the new PM once he or she has been announced. When that meeting is crossed off her to-do list, she’ll then proceed to Balmoral.

But the queen’s retreat won’t be all beach reads and garden parties. While on holiday, she’ll continue to work and read pertinent materials to the Commonwealth, which are delivered to the sweeping estate daily in red boxes. She’ll also continue to be the hostess with the mostest to fellow diplomats and will hold a few public engagements.

The main grounds of Balmoral Castle are currently still open for public visitors, so she’ll likely get some R&R in the Craigowan Lodge on the estate grounds until the main residence closes to the public on Wednesday, July 31.

Prince Philip is also expected to join his beloved at Balmoral, where they’ll remain until early October. It’s anticipated that, in accordance with royal tradition, other members of the family—like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as Kate Middleton and Prince William—will visit for some fun in the sun with Gan-Gan.

Um, not to be presumptuous, but where’s our invite?
