Queen Elizabeth May Be Forced to Push Back Her Christmas Holiday

Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas may be ruined and it’s all thanks to Boris Johnson.

This week, government officials in the United Kingdom announced, if Johnson wins the general election on December 12 they will call upon Her Majesty to make the Queen’s Speech on December 19, the same day her Christmas vacation is supposed to begin.

As The BBC explained, the Queen’s Speech “provides the government with an opportunity to highlight its forthcoming priorities.” It added, “It forms part of the State Opening of Parliament ceremony, which marks the start of the parliamentary year.”

Meaning the Queen will have to stick around London a little longer before she can escape for her vacation.

However, government officials did concede to a few items. Namely, The Express reported, the Queen’s Speech would be expedited and thus be a “dressed down” affair. There will likely be no carriage procession to take the reigning royal from Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament and the Queen will likely not wear a crown for the event. Prince Charles, the Queen’s eldest son, will likely accompany her to the event as her husband Prince Philip has long retired from public events.

“The new parliament will be summoned to meet on Tuesday 17 December, when the business will be the election of the Speaker and the swearing-in of members,” a government official told the paper. “Should this prime minister return, the state opening of parliament and the Queen’s speech will follow on Thursday 19 December.”

This hastened process will allow Johnson to put forth his own EU Withdrawal Agreement, The Express explained, in an attempt to set BREXIT in motion by the end of January.

However, the government official also explained to The Express, if Johnson loses and there is a change in government The Queen will be free to go enjoy her usual vacation.

“If there is a change of government following the election it is anticipated that the Queen’s speech would be in January on a more usual timetable,” the source said. “But this would be a matter for the incoming administration.”

Beyond the government upheaval, the Queen may already be anxious about the holidays thanks in part to her family’s own mini BREXIT.

It was announced earlier this month that the Queen’s grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan Markle would be skipping out on the usual royal traditions and plan to travel to the United States instead. But, with all this activity, maybe a quiet holiday season and low-key New Year is just what the Windsor family needs.
