Queen Elizabeth Honored Prince Philip With Her Brooch During a Navy Carrier Visit

Queen Elizabeth is paying tribute to her late husband, Prince Philip.
On Saturday, the Queen stepped out for a royal engagement at the HMS Queen Elizabeth, an aircraft carrier in Portsmouth, ahead of its world tour. Onboard, the monarch met with Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and Royal Marines personnel who will serve on the ship when it deploys, as well as with 250 U.S. Marines who will also serve onboard during the operation).
The Queen paid tribute to her late husband—who was himself a veteran of the navy—with her choice of jewelry for the engagement. In addition to her bright red coat and hat, the Queen wore her cherished “Scarab” brooch, a piece that’s dear to her as it was a personal gift from Philip in 1966.
The yellow gold brooch is embellished with carved ruby and diamond and has been a favorite of the Queen’s over the years, particularly on occasions linked to the Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen notably wore the brooch in her 70th anniversary portraits with Philip in 2017.
Buckingham Palace shared details about the engagement, along with photos of the Queen (and the brooch) on the official royal family Instagram account on Saturday.
“Her Majesty The Queen visits the company of HMS Queen Elizabeth in Portsmouth to bid them farewell ahead of the ship’s maiden operational deployment,” the palace wrote, along with an anchor emoji. “The Queen is the Sponsor of HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the two largest warships ever built by @RoyalNavy. Her Majesty named @hmsqueenelizabeth on 4th July 2014 at Rosyth, Scotland and attended the ship’s Commissioning Ceremony in Portsmouth in 2017. During today’s visit, The Queen met some of the 1,700 @RoyalNavy, @royalairforceuk and @royalmarines personnel, and 250 US Marines @usmarinecorps, preparing to deploy on board @hmsqueenelizabeth. The aircraft carrier will cover 26,000 nautical miles in 28 weeks, from the Mediterranean to the Philippine Sea. The ship’s company bid farewell with ‘Three Cheers for Her Majesty The Queen’ as The Queen departed HMS Queen Elizabeth via the flight deck.”
