Queen Elizabeth Broke Character to Give a Touching Toast for Prince Charles's Birthday
When you think of Queen Elizabeth, your mind immediately goes to “warm and fuzzy.” (Ha ha. Jokes.)
But it turns out the queen can get a little personal when she wants to. Proof: her surprisingly sentimental toast to son Charles for his 70th birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace.
Acknowledging the privilege of watching him turn 70 (an accomplishment in itself), she said, “It means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up. It is rather like—to use an analogy I am certain will find favor—planting a tree and being able to watch it grow.” If our 92-year-old mom said that, we’d definitely ugly cry.
The queen went on to praise Prince Charles’s dedication to “conservation and the arts,” his loyalty to the royal throne, his role as a father and his creativity and passion. And in a final (and uncharacteristically silly) nod to Charles’s organic food company, Duchy Originals, she closed the speech, “So this toast is to wish a happy birthday to my son, in every respect a duchy original. To you, Charles. To the Prince of Wales.”
