February 6 marks a very special anniversary for Queen Elizabeth II, as the monarch ascended the throne on this date in 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI.

Elizabeth was 25 when she became queen in 1952, and her coronation followed on June 2, 1953. Honoring the 69th anniversary of her ascension to the British throne, which took place on February 6, 1952, the royal family's official Instagram account shared a throwback video.

"#Onthisday in 1952, The Queen acceded to the throne on the death of her father King George VI. Her Majesty has now been Sovereign for 69 years," the caption explained. "📽This clip is taken from Lord Wakehurst’s film about the death of King George VI and The Queen’s accession."

Westminster Abbey's Twitter account paid tribute to the monarch's impressive anniversary by sharing a stunning portrait of the queen.

"Her Majesty The Queen acceded to the throne #onthisday in 1952. She is the longest-reigning monarch in British history, having been Queen for 69 years," the caption said. "This portrait of the Queen wearing her State dress and robe and standing in the Abbey is by Ralph Heimans."

Queen Elizabeth remains a very active monarch, although the continuing COVID-19 pandemic has forced members of the royal family to make some changes to their usual schedules. For instance, at the start of the year, Buckingham Palace confirmed that all garden parties would be canceled for 2021, to keep everyone safe amid social distancing measures and isolation mandates.
