Preparations are now well underway for King Charles’s Coronation in May, which will include an extended weekend of celebrations. And as Camilla prepares to be crowned alongside her husband as Queen Consort, she has also helped to launch an award in honor of the event.

A Coronation Champions Award for volunteers has been announced by UK national charity the Royal Voluntary Service alongside the Queen Consort. Camilla is president of the charity, which had the late Queen Elizabeth as its patron, and she is described by them as “a passionate advocate of volunteering.” People across the UK are invited to nominate volunteers, with 500 winners chosen by a panel to be Coronation Champions. They will receive an official Coronation Champions pin and a certificate signed by the Queen Consort as well as being invited to attend one of the celebrations, such as the Windsor Castle concert or a garden party.

“I am delighted to be launching the Coronation Champions Awards with the Royal Voluntary Service, to shine a light on the herculean efforts of our nation’s volunteers,” Camilla said in a statement. “Up and down the country, millions of unsung heroes are contributing to their local communities, giving generously of their time and their talents to enhance the lives of others. If you know a volunteer who is making a difference, please be sure to share their story. We would love to hear about them!”

The Royal Voluntary Service is seeking nominations in eight award categories They are: supporting older people; supporting young people and children; crisis and welfare; community; sports, culture, and heritage; health and care; sustainability and the environment; and animal welfare. “I know from experience that volunteers don’t do what they do for praise or glory, but I also know that they absolutely deserve it," Catherine Johnstone CBE, Chief Executive of Royal Voluntary Service, said. "The Coronation is the perfect time for us to come together and really show volunteers just how much we appreciate everything they do for our health and happiness."

The Coronation weekend will take place from Saturday May 6 to Monday May 8 and will feature events including pageantry, musical performances, street parties, drone displays and illuminations. May 8 has been designated The Big Help Out and people are being encouraged to volunteer to highlight the positive impact on volunteering and in the hope of creating a lasting legacy.

Many details about the Coronation have yet to be confirmed, but the latest announcements have included the fact that Camilla will be crowned with Queen Mary’s Crown and that twelve new pieces of music will be composed for the occasion.
