Queen Camilla Set to Take Over Queen Elizabeth's Stables

Update: 2/22/23: The Racing Post reports that Queen Camilla will now be listed as a joint owner of the royal horses alongside her husband, King Charles.

Original, 10/3/22: Camilla, Queen Consort, is set to take over the royal stables of her late mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth. King Charles inherited his mother's racehorses, but he does not have the same passion for the sport as Queen Elizabeth.

The Times first reported that Queen Camilla is expected to take control of the stables, and that King Charles intends to scale back the number of royal horses. The around 50 horses in the royal stables cost at least £1.5 million a year, according to Tatler, and the horses total winnings do not top that—meaning that the stables operate on an annual loss.

Queen Elizabeth had a lifelong love of horses. "Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II left an indelible mark on our sport and her legacy will continue to be felt, not only through the horses that will continue to run in the name of King Charles III but also those she bred who are yet to be seen on the racecourse in the years to come," British Horseracing Authority Chair Joe Saumarez Smith said in a statement. "We...keenly look forward to further successes in those famous Royal silks on British racecourses."

King Charles did have a brief period as an amateur jockey in the 1980s, but it is his wife, Camilla, who is a fan of the sport. "He has always followed it, but it has been his mother’s interest so it has been at arm’s length. He owns a few horses himself, in particular with the [then] Duchess of Cornwall. She is absolutely besotted by racing," John Warren, Queen Elizabeth II's former racing advisor has previously said.
