Queen Camilla has made it a point to wear jewels beloved by Queen Elizabeth II, and now she’s broken out one of the late royal’s most cherished pieces.

On Wednesday evening, during a dinner celebrating King Charles III’s first official visit to the City of London, Camilla donned the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, Page Six reported. The namesake young women originally gifted the headpiece to Queen Mary in 1893, who later gave the tiara to Elizabeth upon her marriage to Prince Philip in 1947.

Camilla paired the jewels with a black Bruce Oldfield gown with silver vine details that she had previously worn. She further accessorized with Elizabeth’s South African Diamond necklace and bracelet, gifted to the late queen by the South African prime minister when she visited the country on her 21st birthday.

Royal jewelry expert Lauren Kiehna “was a little surprised to see the tiara again so soon, but it was a happy surprise,” she told Page Six. “While many were happy to see the tiara again, others felt that it was a difficult reminder of the beloved late queen.”

During her reign, Queen Elizabeth donned the tiara frequently, making it one of her most-worn headpieces. She even sported it for official photos depicted on money in the United Kingdom and various Commonwealth countries. As such, some royal lovers were a bit taken aback to see Camilla pull out the piece so soon after Elizabeth’s death.

“We’ve seen QEII wear it so often for so many years, that I think of it as hers,” one user posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Just no. It was queen Elizabeth’s signature tiara.too soon,” wrote another.

Over the past year, Camilla has worn many jewels that the world used to see on Elizabeth. Just last month, she donned a sapphire-and-diamond necklace that was one of the late queen’s favorites. And earlier this year, she opted for a rare diamond-and-emerald brooch that the late queen wore only occasionally.

These decisions, Kiehna said, are intentional. “Charles and Camilla have signaled that continuity is a major theme of his early reign, and paying tribute to the late Elizabeth II by wearing her jewels is part of that thread linking the two eras,” she said.
