The QAnon Congresswoman Challenged AOC to a Debate and Wow, Please Make It Happen

Now that Oprah’s interview with Harry and Meghan has made me believe in appointment viewing again, I’ve decided on the next thing I’d tune in to see: Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene debating Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about the Green New Deal.

Granted, this wasn’t actually my idea. On Wednesday, Rep. Greene tweeted at AOC: "I’d like to challenge you to a debate on the Green New Deal economic policy. Since you sponsored the Green New Deal and have a degree in Economics, I’m sure you are more than qualified."

She continued, writing that the American people "deserve to hear the two sides with pro’s [sic] and cons" and suggested that both Greene and AOC could choose a moderator and then negotiate with a major news network hosting said debate. "Let’s do this for The People," she wrote. "What do you say?" (Personally, I'd say that I'd like to see it, but probably not for the same reasons as Greene.)

Several hours later, Greene tweeted at AOC again, writing, "People are saying they would pay money to see it. We could debate pay per view style? And the money raised could be split between us for our choosing of where it goes. What do you think?"

Unsurprisingly, AOC has yet to respond to Greene's request, and the reasons are fairly clear. For one, AOC is a busy person working at her actual job, and as comedian Amber Ruffin pointed out, this seems like a pretty blatant attempt by Greene to use AOC's "popularity to help her get attention." But Greene has also garnered quite a reputation for promoting various conspiracy theories, including QAnon, which theorizes that some high-ranking Democratic politicians are part of a group of pedophiles and Satan-worshippers. Greene also forced AOC's colleague and fellow Squad member Rep. Cori Bush to switch congressional offices in January for her "team's safety" after saying Greene and her staff "berated" her in a hallway. Plus, Greene's request was patronizing at best; not only did AOC sponsor the Green New Deal climate proposal, her work addressing climate change and climate justice has significantly influenced the Democratic party, including President Biden's own approach to environmental policy.

And if you're wondering where exactly Greene stands on climate issues, Refinery29 points out that during a March town hall, she said, "How much taxes and how much money did the people back in the Ice Age spend to warm up the earth?"

So, yeah. But back to the debate: If this were to happen, I'd watch only to see the shit show that would surely occur if Greene were to go up against a congresswoman who has been routinely lauded for her ability to communicate complex issues and deliver viral, powerful speeches under pressure. Just tell me when!
