It's been just about a year and a half since the good folks at Timex decided to delve into the archives and reissue a design from 1979 known as the Q Timex, setting off a veritable frenzy in the process. I've lost count of how many times the OG from the now-expanded collection—the "Pepsi" colorway with the red-and-navy bezel and navy dial—sold out and was restocked, but at this point it's reliably available to anyone who happens to be in the market. Which brings me, dear reader, to you. Yes, you! You are the person who should be in the market. Why? Let me tell you all about it.

It's a very, very good gift.

To illustrate my point here, please allow me a (brief) personal anecdote. It was last Christmas, and because we were still in the "actually seeing people and doing things" stage of reality, I was at my parents' place watching my dad unwrap a gift from my mom. It was (I know you already know this) the Q Timex Reissue watch in red and navy, still mighty hard to come by at that particular juncture and, credit where it's due, a pretty solid gifting flex from the matriarch of the family. My dad is not an emphatic "watch guy" type. He doesn't spend time considering the relative merits of Pateks versus Panerais. But man, he was pumped to get the Q Timex. It's the kind of watch that zeroes in on the stuff that a lot (and I mean a lot) of folks love about vintage timepieces—the not-too-big 38mm size, the classic diver looks—and delivers them all in an affordable package. That's a pretty great gift right there, no matter who's on the receiving end of the exchange.

It's also great for your own collection.

Everything that I just said about what makes this watch a great gift? Yeah, well, no huge surprise here, but that's also what makes it a great fit for your own collection. Does everyone on your list have an Apple Watch or some other wearable with which they are staunchly unwilling to part? Well, that's a little weird, but no worries! Buy this watch for yourself, instead. Not only will it set you apart from the (weirdly homogenous) pack of people with whom you associate, it'll also make a welcome addition to whatever you're wearing on any given day. It looks great with casual gear like jeans and a T-shirt, and pairs equally well with dressier stuff for that James Bond-y kinda vibe. I doubt there's a tux in most folks' immediate futures, but the time will come. It has to (right?).

It updates all the right stuff.

So, about all that vintage inspiration. The team at Timex was faithful to the core design details of the 1979 Q Timex, but they also made sure to include all the necessary updates and improvements to make sure this watch holds its own in 2020. That means you still get the domed acrylic crystal and the battery hatch that featured on the original when it hit shelves in the midst of the watch world's quartz revolution, but you also get a stainless steel case and bracelet—plus 50 meters of water resistance—so you can actually put this thing through the paces without worrying about roughing it up. And believe me, with all this watch has going for it, put it through the paces you will.
