They seemed like the perfect couple, so fans were confused (as we were) when we heard the reason why Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner divorced.
The Game of Thrones star and pop music icon connected in 2016. While oh-so-casually modeling with a unicorn for Harper’s Bazaar UK, Turner explained that she and Jonas had quite a few mutual friends try to set them up, but it just never ended up happening. She said it must have been fate, though, because “[they] were following each other on Instagram, and he direct messaged [her] one fine day, out of the blue.” Bold move! But clearly, it worked in his favor. It’s also a technique that the JoBros seem to really like. Nick Jonas slid into his now-wife’s Twitter DMs with the line, “I think we should connect.”

A year later, he popped the question, and they got married in Vegas in 2019. Their first child, daughter Willa, was born in 2020 and their second, another daughter, in 2022. “It’s been amazing to be a dad and to learn every day more about myself and what that’s like,” Jonas told PEOPLE at the time. “It’s what life is about for me – raising the next generation,” Turner told Elle UK. “The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength. We’re so excited to be expanding the family. It’s the best blessing ever.”
But after news broke over the Labor Day 2023 weekend that he’d hired a divorce lawyer, fans were scrambling to find out why Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were divorcing.

The reason Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are divorcing is, erm, “different lifestyles” according to a report by TMZ—the site first to break the news—which said that he’d filed the paperwork to end his marriage on September 5, 2023.
“She likes to party, he likes to stay at home. They have very different lifestyles,” an insider told the tabloid, which also said that he’d hired attorney Tom Sasser, who handled Tiger Woods’ divorce and would be asking for joint custody of the couple’s two children, Willa born in 2020 and their other daughter, born in 2022, whose name has not been made public.
In a joint statement issued to Instagram, the couple explained: “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” they said.
On September 21, 2023, Page Six reported that Sophie Turner is suing Joe Jonas. The Game of Thrones actress filed for “the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained,” the documents, which were obtained by Page Six, stated.
Turner claims in the filing that the “wrongful retention” began September 20, 2023 and also claimed that the former couple would make England their “forever home” and would begin looking for schools for their older daughter, Willa, in the country. “The parties were both excited for the family’s move to England,” the documents stated, adding that it was the reason why the two sold their Miami home.
The family officially relocated from Miami to England on April 10, 2023, but Jonas and Turner “agreed with hesitation” that the children travel with the Jonas Brothers member on tour, since he had time to spend during the day.
“The children would then at least be able to spend some time during the day with one of their parents until the Mother finished her filming commitments,” the documents explain, noting that the daughters traveling on tour would only be a “temporary arrangement” when she was filming Joan. It was also reported that the two had an argument on August 15, 2023, on Jonas’ birthday and that she found out that he filed for divorce “through the media.”
Turner also claimed that Jonas retains the children’s passports. “The Father has possession of the children’s passports,” the documents claim. “He refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother.” Turner is also planning to have a similar lawsuit in the UK since it would allegedly be a “breach” of her custody rights.
Some anonymous sources quoted in tabloids have tried to place the blame solely on Turner in a typical anti-female manner, claiming that she had been an absent mother too focused on “partying” to be a mother.
“Divorce was a last resort for Joe. He never wanted to break up his family, but he had to take what he felt was the best course of action for his girls,” an insider told Page Six. “An unhappy home isn’t a home, and the truth is that he and Sophie were going through it this year. There’s a lot of noise out there, but it wasn’t a straw-that-broke-the-camel’s-back situation like it’s being reported.” The source concluded: “It just kept building, and Joe finally reached a point where he felt that he had exhausted all options to salvage the marriage.”
Meanwhile, TMZ reported that “multiple sources” said that “Joe had access to a ring cam that he said captured Sophie saying and/or doing something that made him realize the marriage was over.” Whatever that means.
Divorce documents obtained by People revealed, “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken,” with sources explaining that the split did not come as a “surprise” to those who were close to the couple. “They were not separated but they’ve been living separate lives for months,” the source said. “As far as custody goes, this literally all just happened, so they’re figuring it out in real-time. They did have a prenup. As a family, they were based in Florida. The kids were with him the last few months, traveling with him with family while he’s been on tour. Sophie’s been working in the UK.”
Just a day prior, Jonas seemingly rebutted the rumors he and his wife of four years were heading for a split, sharing a selfie with his wedding ring clearly still on his finger on Instagram. Understandably, fans took that to mean that the rumors were total BS.
The selfie was in response to reports from TMZ, then by People, that the A-listers were heading for a split according to anonymous insiders. “Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … Joe had his people contact and consult with at least 2 L.A.-area divorce lawyers and he is on the cusp of filing divorce docs to end his marriage to Sophie,” the tabloid said, observing that he’s gone with and without his wedding ring on public outings.
TMZ added that they were told Turner and Jonas have had “serious problems” for the good part of the year, and that “Joe has been caring for their 2 young children “pretty much all of the time,” even as his band was touring. We’re told Joe currently has both kids, as the group plays around the U.S.” People, meanwhile, reported that Jonas “had retained a divorce lawyer”, though the article noted that reps for neither star commented on the rumors.
It wasn’t the first time the couple had faced challenges. Apparently, Turner and Jonas went through a breakup right before their wedding. The Game of Thrones actress explained that the couple split for 24 hours before realizing it was a horrible decision and got back together. “It was the worst day of our lives,” she explained to The Sunday Times. But thankfully, it helped them realize they should be together. “For a second, we both had cold feet, then 24 hours later we were both, like, ‘Never mind.’”
They tied the knot with a surprise wedding in Las Vegas in 2019, and went through a rocky point in their relationship. Turner said it had a lot to do with her mental health. “I was going through this phase of being very mentally unwell,” the 23-year-old recalled. “He was, like, ‘I can’t be with you until you love yourself, I can’t see you love me more than you love yourself.’ That was something, him doing that. I think he kind of saved my life, in a way.”
Turner went on to explain why she was going through such a rough time. Rising to such quick fame at the age of 13 (when Game of Thrones came out) was a lot for her to handle.
Dealing with online critics also took a toll on the young actress. “Having your adolescence being displayed in public, that’s something I really wish hadn’t happened,” Turner said. “Being in the age of social media when that’s happening, I think I would be a much saner person if I hadn’t been documented from 13 — your most awkward, uncomfortable, unsure-of-yourself years.”
Turner has repeatedly credited Jonas for helping her through tough times. While speaking with Phil McGraw back in April, she told the Dr. Phil host, “I’m with someone that makes me realize I do have some redeeming qualities, I suppose. And when someone tells you they love you every day, it makes you really think about why that is, and I think it makes you love yourself a bit more.”
While speaking with the Times, the Dark Phoenix star also gave Game of Thrones a shoutout, explaining that her character, Sansa Stark, taught her what it was like to have strength. Turner thanked Sansa for giving her the ability to cope with her issues.
“It sounds stupid, but I don’t think I would have been able to get through the hardships — I mean, boo hoo — but the hardships, mental health-wise, in my life without playing Sansa and without having that constant inspiration,” she told the outlet. “If she can do it, then I can definitely do it.”
