When the world is coming down, you make the best of what’s still around. That’s probably why jigsaw puzzles—once a rainy-day activity—have become almost as essential as toilet paper. The thing is, the boom in puzzle popularity has led to an actual shortage. Getting a great puzzle right now is not as easy as it once was.
During the initial weeks of widespread social-distancing orders, top puzzle manufacturer Ravensburger saw its U.S. puzzle sales soar 370 percent. The company has sold a staggering 20 puzzles per minute this year so far. Keeping up with demand has been difficult, industry-wide; Google searches for puzzles show a 671 percent increase between March 12 and March 29.
Industry insiders know the power of the puzzle: “In times of uncertainty, puzzles are emotionally calming,” says Thomas Kaeppelar, president of Ravensburger North America, in a conversation with Yahoo Lifestyle. “They also provide a way to cope with anxiety and boredom.”
In addition, puzzles are a natural way for families to be together. Everyone can work at their own pace, “with the satisfaction,” adds Kaeppelar, “of completing something in a world where so much is out of control.” Amen to that.
Here are 11 puzzles—of various levels of challenge—to bring you that sense of calm, control, and peace we all crave right now. Scoop them up before they sell out.
