The hockey player hopes to "help keep pets and people together."

One hockey player is partnering up with Purina, as well as animal welfare nonprofit RedRover, in support of The Purple Leash Project. This project aims to 'raise awareness of the lack of pet-friendly spaces at domestic violence shelters' through education and donation, and now it has one more major supporter.

Iowa Wild defenseman Dakota Mermis contacted animal welfare nonprofit RedRover after reading about the Purple Leash Project. Together (and with the help of Purina) Mermis and his team came up with some meaningful (and fun) ways to help out. He explains more about the partnership in a Facebook video from the Iowa Wild.

Isn't this amazing? We love that Mermis and his wife were able to combine their passions for pets and hockey into this incredible partnership. Even their pups and their infant son made appearances in the video!

The Purple Leash Project is "building a future where no one escaping abuse has to leave a pet behind," and we can't think of a more worthy cause to support. Luckily, Mermis and his team came up with so many ways pet lovers can help.

For anyone living near Des Moines, Iowa, you'll want to head to Wells Fargo Arena for the Iowa Wild's Pucks 'N Paws game on Sunday, April 2. Not only can you bring your dog to this hockey game, but you can also bid on a specially designed Purple Leash Project hockey stick that Mermis will be using during the game. As he mentioned in the video, you can also stop by the Purple Leash Project table to learn more about the organization.

According to a press release from Purina, fans will also be able to bid on an authentic Dakota Mermis jersey as well as two special gift baskets. These "Favorite Things" baskets will be filled with goodies that each of Mermis' dogs--Charlie and Kaizer--go head-over-paws for.

There's even one more way to give back while you're there: donate $60 at the Purple Leash Project booth to receive a purple leash of your very own. If you're not located in Iowa, though, you can spread the word on social media, or donate online in seconds.
