This Psychological Mind-Bender Is Now the #1 Movie on Netflix

Our brain isn't ready for this one.

The latest movie to hit #1 on Netflix is Synchronic, a mind-blowing thriller about two paramedics trying to solve a mysterious set of deaths linked to an unusual narcotic. Starring Anthony Mackie (known for playing Samuel Wilson, or the Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey), this looks like a movie that will keep us guessing the whole way through.

Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, the filmmakers behind recent psychological thrillers like Spring and The Endless, this movie is the latest in a streak of sci-fi hair-raisers that have been uploaded to the streaming site.

The official write-up for the movie says, "When New Orleans paramedics and longtime best friends Steve (Mackie) and Dennis (Dornan) are called to a series of bizarre, gruesome accidents, they chalk it up to the mysterious new party drug found at the scene. But after Dennis’s oldest daughter suddenly disappears, Steve stumbles upon a terrifying truth about the supposed psychedelic that will challenge everything he knows about reality—and the flow of time itself."

After getting its world premiere back in 2019, the movie was released to theaters last October before having its Netflix debut this weekend. Critics have praised the film, like Jake Kleinman, who wrote on Inverse that "This time-travel thriller with noir influences has something interesting to say, both about the genres it dips into and the history of America." Meanwhile, Collider called it a "jaw-dropping slice of modern-day sci-fi."

We're so ready for this one.
