PSA: These are our top tips for shopping amazing plus-size occasion wear

When I tell you that I’ve been on a year-long odyssey, what I mean is that I’ve ordered *literally* dozens and dozens of fancy, plus-size dresses online, banged my head against what feels like every single changing-room wall out there and spent countless hours researching options for myself, my mum and my friends – for my own wedding and the 10 weddings I’ve attended in the past two years alone.

I mean, seriously, finding a party dress is hard enough when you have to factor in the weather, the event’s setting and specific dress codes (or lack thereof). But it’s beyond frustrating when you’re a size 18 or higher. What you’ll typically find is dowdy. Or Strictly Come Dancing-level sparkly with cut-outs and high slits that are far from conducive to any shapewear, bras or knickers (attempting to go commando can get complicated with D+ cups and thigh chafe to strategise around).

So where exactly is the plus-size occasion wear that’s decidedly not terrible? Friends, after exhaustive research and with help from a few experts, I’m happy to report that it’s right here. Behold, your new blueprint for plus-size shopping – sans the drama.

1. Look at the (right) size chart

Get measurements from the actual designer instead of the retailer, says Susan Ruddie Spring, founder of NYC alterations specialist The Wedding Dresser. Numbers just aren't consistent across brands. If you’re unsure, go bigger. "You can always get something taken
in, but there’s only so much room to take something out," says bridal stylist Gabrielle Hurwitz.

2. Buy in threes

After attempting to wriggle into many (allegedly) size 18 and 20 gowns that are actually cut like 12s and 14s, I now try up to three different sizes at a time. Formal dresses often involve non-stretch materials, taut waistbands, hidden zipper closures and tighter linings. Just remember to check return policies before buying – unless you want to keep the lot.

3. Go custom

Sustainable labels such as We Are Kin and Molby The Label offer bespoke, statement pieces that are made to order via standard sizing charts or custom measurements, meaning no shape or size is off limits and your look is truly customised. Investing in a piece like this is worth the higher price when it perfectly fits the unique shape of your body.

4. Don’t sleep on bridal wear brands

Even if you’re only a guest. We’ve come a long way from the extremely '80s, shoulder-padded wedding party era. Brands such as Jenny Yoo and Azazie have great inclusive options. Fair warning: make sure that you’re organised and buy far in advance (unless it’s a ready-to-ship style), as many bridesmaid dresses will take a while to arrive.

5. Think beyond dresses and gowns

Consider a silk maxi skirt with a cashmere jumper for cooler-temp weddings and a colourful wide-leg suit or a tuxedo paired with "a really cute corset for a less stuffy event," says Hurwitz. Look for separates over sets, just like you would with swimwear, Ruddie Spring adds. For jumpsuits, get one with a waist seam so a tailor can perfect the always-tricky torso proportions

6. Let your accessories work

For last-minute occasions, lean on your most main-character add-ons to glam up the staples hanging in your wardrobe. A killer bag, sculptural heels or shoulder-dusting earrings instantly elevate my go-to black plisse palazzo trousers and tops from Zara, H&M
and Good American. Plus, with this strategy, it’s unlikely you’ll match outfits with another guest.
