PSA: Your Costco Mattress Might Be Covered in Invisible Mold

We love Costco as much as the next person who loves to save on home essentials, but every so often there is Costco news that keeps us up at night. On September 21, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 48,000 mattresses sold exclusively at Costco due to risk of mold exposure.

If you, like plenty of others, recently purchased your mattress at Costco and are starting to spiral, you may have nothing to fear. The only brand being recalled is Novaform—specifically the 14-inch ComfortGrande and the eight-inch DreamAway mattresses. All of the potentially affected beds were sold online and in Costco stores in the Northwest United States and in the San Francisco Bay area between January and June 2023.

The C.P.S.C. has received 541 reports of mold on the mattresses, but no injuries have been reported so far. This is likely because though all types of mold are pretty gross, they’re not necessarily dangerous—especially if you don’t have a compromised immune system, damaged lungs, or an allergy. So, if you don’t meet any of the listed criteria, there’s no need to panic about potentially ensuing illnesses.

That said, you should definitely still return your mattress for a mold-free alternative because cleaning mold out of a mattress is not a chore we’d recommend adding to your list. (If your bed isn't on this list, still take this as a sign to clean your mattress!)
