Protestors Rally on the Steps of the Supreme Court to Defend DACA

Today, the Supreme Court begins to hear the case that will decide the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, colloquially known as DACA, after President Donald Trump's administration has worked to dismantle the program. Hundreds of protestors showed up on the steps of the Supreme Court and across the country to defend DACA and its so-called "Dreamers," even while a majority of the Supreme Court justices appear ready to side with Trump.

DACA, which serves nearly 700,000 Dreamers since it was first introduced in 2012 during President Barack Obama's administration, temporarily protects undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as children from deportation without offering a pathway to citizenship. Dreamers can also receive benefits from participating in the program, such as work permits and some access to state-funded grants and loans.

In 2017, Trump officially announced that he would work to rescind DACA, arguing that the Obama–era policy "is unlawful and unconstitutional and cannot be successfully defended in court."
