Protesters Wore Evil Eye Gloves to the March for Our Lives

The symbol has a long and important history.

If you attended or caught footage of yesterday's March for Our Lives, you might have noticed people wearing gloves with eyes on them. These accessories, dubbed "evil eye gloves," have become a symbol for the cause of gun control.

Krista Suh, who was involved in the creation of the Women's March pussy hats, came up with the idea. The design sends the message that "we have our eyes on politicians who take money from the NRA," she told USA Today. "We are watching, and you need to serve the people, not lobbyists."

She further explained to CNN that the gloves actually originated in a dream of hers. "I had a dream of a protest, a huge peaceful crowd with their hands outstretched toward the sky — each palm had a huge EYE drawn on it," she said. "It was a Sea of Eyes."

Over a thousand gloves were donated to the march to make Krista's dream a reality. Protesters have posted photos of gloves of all different colors on Instagram, and the trend also made its way to Etsy, where several versions of the gloves are available for sale, with proceeds being donated to the March for Our Lives cause.

The symbol originated in Mediterranean and Western Asian cultures, according to CNN, and is often considered a way to protect its wearers from danger. This explanation adds another layer of significance to a march aimed at protecting children (and Americans of all ages) from guns.

The protest, organized by students, led an estimated 800,000 people to show up in Washington, DC and many others to attend other marches around the country, potentially making it the biggest one-day protest in recorded history.
