Protecting pools from cicadas: What to do when they end up in water

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Cicadas are here and there have been plenty of tips about keeping homes, landscaping and pets safe from them. But what about a backyard pool?

Experts said that pool and hot tub owners will have to make a habit out of cleaning dead insects from the water. When cicadas end up in water, they release nitrogen.

What happens if your pets eat cicadas?

“You want to get that out of the pool,” said Codi Braun, Office Manager of Imperial Pools in Champaign. “So skimming them when they’re in there, and get them out with a skimmer.”

Braun added that her business has professionals who go out every day to check on pools and take care of dead cicadas for the owner.
