Protected Period Details Stand Out in This $6.2 Million Condo in a Landmarked N.Y.C. Building

In a landmarked Renaissance Revival-style building capped by a clocktower in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood, across the hall from an apartment that music industry legend Clive Davis never actually lived in but sold earlier this year for $4.6 million to the founders of DutchX, a two-bedroom apartment brimming with extravagant period details is now available for $6.24 million. The listing is held by a constellation of agents from Douglas Elliman: Jane Powers, Matthew McKay, Elena Sarkissian, and Christopher Salierno.

Originally designed by architect Griffith Thomas and completed in 1870 as the headquarters for the New York Life Insurance Company, the lavishly ornamented building at 108 Leonard Street was expanded in the 1890s by the esteemed firm McKim, Mead & White, whose best-known commissions include Manhattan’s Penn Station and the Washington Square Arch. The structure occupies an entire city block and is faced mostly with Tuckahoe marble (other areas are brick and terracotta).

The 650-square-foot great room is capped by an extravagant plaster and mahogany ceiling.

Converted to luxury residences in 2018 by Howard L. Zimmerman Architects, with residential appointments and amenities by hospitality designer Jeffrey Beers International, there are three attended lobbies, one of them with spectacular landmarked fittings and fixtures.

In the building’s northeast corner, a 2,400-square-foot fifth-floor spread, entered by way of a landmarked vestibule, exudes Gilded Age opulence with landmarked walls lined with mahogany pilasters, intricate moldings, ornate plaster ceilings, and massive arched windows.

Ceilings soar to more than 15 feet in the nearly 650-square-foot great room, which also showcases ash-toned chevron-patterned oak parquet, while the sleek, all-white, and windowed kitchen sports Scavolini cabinetry, Calacatta marble counters and backsplashes, and professional Miele appliances that include a coffee station and wine fridge. Besides the arched windows, there’s not much in the way of period detailing in any of the three bedrooms. Each bedroom has a private marble bath, while the primary suite also has a spacious walk-in closet. There’s also a powder room for visitors.

Residents of 108 Leonard are pampered with 20,000 square feet of wellness-driven amenity spaces that include a chef’s kitchen and lounge, a wine cellar with a private dining and tasting room, a private screening room, a 75-foot indoor pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and rooftop gardens with cabana seating and outdoor dining.

There’s also a heated “paparazzi-proof” interior motor court with valet parking, which makes for discreet comings and goings and may be one of the features that has attracted residents like Zoe Jackson (the reality TV producer daughter of Samuel Jackson), beauty entrepreneur Cassandra Grey (the surviving wife of late Hollywood heavy hitter Brad Grey) and her partner DJ/songwriter Samantha Ronson, and Nashville-based showbiz power couple Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban.
