Originally designed by architect Griffith Thomas and completed in 1870 as the headquarters for the New York Life Insurance Company, the lavishly ornamented building at 108 Leonard Street was expanded in the 1890s by the esteemed firm McKim, Mead & White, whose best-known commissions include Manhattan’s Penn Station and the Washington Square Arch. The structure occupies an entire city block and is faced mostly with Tuckahoe marble (other areas are brick and terracotta).

Converted to luxury residences in 2018 by Howard L. Zimmerman Architects, with residential appointments and amenities by hospitality designer Jeffrey Beers International, there are three attended lobbies, one of them with spectacular landmarked fittings and fixtures.
In the building’s northeast corner, a 2,400-square-foot fifth-floor spread, entered by way of a landmarked vestibule, exudes Gilded Age opulence with landmarked walls lined with mahogany pilasters, intricate moldings, ornate plaster ceilings, and massive arched windows.
