Prospect Park’s Smorgasburg: ‘It’s all about the people and the food’
PROSPECT PARK, Brooklyn (PIX11) — Bring your appetite and sample beyond delicious food from around the world. That’s the idea behind Smorgasburg, and it’s now back in a big way this month.
It’s been called the Woodstock of food. You can find the largest weekly open-air food market in the country at the World Trade Center on Fridays, in Williamsburg on Saturdays and in Prospect Park on Sundays.
It started in Williamsburg in 2011, hence the mashup of the words, smorgasbord and Williamsburg. And it just grew and grew and grew.

This Sunday in Prospect Park, there were food vendors from all over the world. The Philippines had Patok by Rach, Italian barbecue represented by D’Abruzzo, Korean street food from Twig’m, and many others.
Tosh’s Jamaican beef patties sold out within the first hour, but they still made some banana fritters with homemade Jamaican ice cream.
“It’s been a crazy day because we had the marathon,” Renee Cox, mother of Tosh’s Jamaican Beef Patties, told PIX11 News. “We sold out of the mushroom, chicken and beef patties.”
There was also an incredibly long line for the Vermont maple lemonade stall. Why are people willing to wait so long?
“I wait all week for this guava juice,” Nia Jones told PIX11 News.
“We don’t use any sugar. We just use Vermont maple syrup,” Genevieve Cox, Vermont maple lemonade seller, told PIX11 News. “It comes from Huntington, Vermont, way up north of Mount Mansfield.”
There was an equally long line for fresh coconut juice and sugar cane to either eat or drink.
For many, this is their weekly tradition as soon as spring arrives. And they go as much for the positive, party-like atmosphere as for the delicious food.
“Just being around people, that’s the best. It’s not just about the food,” Lisa Branic told PIX11 News.
