Professional Skier Makes First Turns Of The Winter Season At Alta Ski Area

Last Friday, October 13th, after an early season storm, professional skier and mountaineer Caroline Gleich ticked off an important annual milestone at Alta Ski Area, Utah: first turns of the season.

Here's the photo recap.

This might go without saying, but Gleich's trip up Alta didn't involve riding the lifts -- Alta won't open until November 17th. Instead, she did what any go-getter skier would do given the circumstances: earned those turns.

Gleich wasn't alone in enjoying the early-season bounty. OpenSnow forecaster and snowboarder Luke Stone was also shredding at Alta last week.

Here's a peek.

Sadly, temps at Alta have risen since these images and videos were taken. Right now, it's about 60 degrees at the Utah ski area, with the coming days bringing similarly warm temperatures. That's the reality of October: one minute, it's dumping snow, the next, not so much.

But thankfully, there's plenty of time for winter to show up in Utah and elsewhere throughout North America properly. Most major resorts, aside from a few outliers, are targetting mid to late-November opening dates. That leaves an ample buffer zone for the snow to pile up before the lifts start spinning.

As always, think snow!
