Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Kick Off the Wedding Festivities With a Prayer Service

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are officially blessing their wedding week beginning with a prayer service called the Puja held Wednesday, November 28.

“The Puja is an auspicious ceremony,” Shawna Gohel, founder and CEO of Maharani Weddings, tells The Knot. “It’s to bring good energy, asking for the gods and goddesses to welcome the union of the couple.”

The couple arrived to her mother’s home in Mumbai to a flurry of activity as they both stepped out in custom pre-wedding looks by Manish Malhotra. Chopra looked resplendent in an embellished powder blue outfit, while Jonas wore a pink kurta (a garment worn up top in India). The designer, on social media, described the looks as “refreshing combinations of powder blue and salmon pink.”

The Puja will be the first of many pre-wedding rituals and ceremonies for the couple, who will round out the week by exchanging vows at the renowned Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India.

It’s speculated that Chopra will stick with Manish Malhotra as her wedding dress designer as well. “I don’t know that she’s going to jump designers,” says Gohel. “For Indian weddings, the ultimate designer to have is Manish.”

Overall, Jonas and Chopra’s nuptials will be thoughtfully infused with references to both their identities. “Priyanka’s background is a unique blend of different parts of India,” Gohel explains. “She’s from Jamshedpur, but her dad is from Punjab. They moved to Delhi, so she’s going to have an Indian wedding mixed with traditions. She’s going to pick and choose what she wants, and as the week goes on, it will get more lavish.”

The couple’s wedding follows a whirlwind courtship and engagement. Chopra celebrated her bridal shower at Tiffany’s in early November, followed by her bachelorette party in Amsterdam.
