Intelligent. Sophisticated. Bold. Those few words accurately describe badass woman Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the global actor, producer, and entrepreneur best known for her work in Indian cinema and the American entertainment industry. (Most recently, she starred in Amazon Prime Video’s spy thriller Citadel.) By happenstance, she’s also married to beloved Jonas Brother singer Nick Jonas, a relationship that directs 24/7 attention—mostly because of their sweet chemistry and loving dynamic. In sum, Chopra Jonas is Hollywood royalty, the definition of a star.

It’s no wonder she recently chose to partner with Marshalls—yes, the literally-carries-it-all, affordable department store likely adored by several generations in your family—for the Marshalls Good Stuff Social Club, an initiative designed to inspire and uplift women. Held on October 20th in Manhattan, the two-day event featured exciting networking opportunities and panels aimed at helping guests make more money, advocate for themselves at work, and score the perfect headshot. It was like LinkedIn IRL—cute outfits and lots of iced coffee included.

Of course, the 41-year-old looked fly as she prepared for a keynote Q&A session. “The through-line between me and the company is wanting to uplift women, taking two days to create community and talk about your dreams, what you want to be, your aspirations, fears,” Chopra Jonas told StyleCaster at the event. “You know, the temperature of the world is in a very uncertain place, so I look forward to having community. For Marshalls to not just talk the talk but actually walk the walk, it was a no-brainer to associate with them.”

And walk the walk they did—and will continue to do. Just ask Victoria Shonkoff, vice president and marketing director of Marshalls. “In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing digital content to further support women on their journey to achieve the lives they want,” Shonkoff said.

I caught up with Chopra Jonas at the event to discuss the initiative, style, and the best advice she learned in her 30s. As expected, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ quotes about confidence, financial success, and work are brilliant.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

StyleCaster: You’re in a fab Marshalls look today. Do you have a favorite Marshalls memory you cherish?

PCJ: I had just moved to America in my 30s. Moving countries when you’re an adult is tough and I didn’t really have friends and community. I was feeling slightly alone, so I wanted to find a hobby. [One day], I just stopped at a Marshalls. I went in there and I was like, I’m going to find a hobby. I walked around and I bought easels. I remember buying black and white easels and paint brushes. I tried to paint—that didn’t work out eventually. But that experience of going in there and seeing what the possibilities were was something I really needed at the time. It’s such a prolific memory I have.

SC: You mentioned being in your 30s at the time. Is there one lesson or piece of advice you learned in that decade you’d like to share for anyone in their 30s?

PCJ: They’re so much better than your 20s. Your 40s are even better. It just gets better if you allow it to. The one thing I’ve learned now that I’ve left my 30s behind was that it’s a decade where you’re old enough to know better but you’re still young enough to be stupid, and it’s an informed decision. I love the freedom of that.

SC: In your keynote, you plan to discuss lessons for getting the good stuff in life. What is your definition of the good life?

PCJ: It’s super different for everyone. Whatever your aspirations are for your individual self is what you call the good life. My good life is always surrounded by my family; feeling good about myself starts from feeling good at home. That’s been through my whole life. Feeling good about myself and having confidence and self-worth—that’s also really been very important to me. Everyone can have an aspiration or an ambition, but you have to ask yourself what the intention for it is because the good life comes from that intentionality

SC: It can be difficult to have self-worth and find confidence. What do you do on days when you’re feeling lower than usual to snap back?

PCJ: Allow yourself to feel it. Don’t be too tough on yourself. My job is the worst because I’m expected to be completely and totally normal no matter what happens in my life. I’m expected to be on a red carpet and be effervescent. It doesn’t matter what just happened in the car before I walked out. That may not be everyone’s reality. Allow yourself to feel it. I have reached a point—and again, this is something that happened to me in my 30s—where I didn’t fight it. If I was in a bad mood, I wouldn’t be awful to be around; I would do my job and be professional. But I didn’t switch it off. When you push it under the rug too much and too often, which we tend to do because all of us have a lot of questions about our self-worth, then it becomes too big to deal with.

SC: Comfort outfits can be so powerful on days when your self-worth isn’t so great. Do you have a go-to comfort outfit when you still have to be in an important meeting, for example, and show up as your best self?

PCJ: If I don’t want to be super tight, I would just wear a good, big oversize blazer—it will save you on those days where you’re just like, I feel bloated or I don’t want to be in something tight. Something that’s boss-worthy. Underneath you can wear a little crop top with a skirt, jeans with a T-shirt tucked in—anything becomes professional-looking and at the same time it hides what you don’t want people to see. That’s a good trick.

SC: There are so many funny 2023 and 2024 fashion trends, like strawberry girl makeup. Are there any that have made you giggle or raise an eyebrow?

PCJ: You know those ‘90s clips we used to wear in high school? The butterfly clips? I saw a TikTok and I was like, I wonder what I might do with them now? I might need to be on a beach, like, at a rave. Oh, and low-waisted jeans. I don’t think I could fit into them anymore. That’s one where I’m like, why did you have to come back?

SC: Part of what you’ll discuss at the Marshalls Good Stuff Social Club is financial planning. What’s some stellar money advice you’ve learned?

PCJ: Being financially independent is very crucial. Keeping a little bit for yourself and saving for a rainy day is something my mother always taught me. You save for a rainy day and then you think about your expenses. You save a little bit for your future and then you pay your bills and then there’s play money, or money for whatever you want to do. Start with saving and then spending. It’s a trick I still use.
