Earlier this week, Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, the fourth in line to the Norwegian throne, announced her engagement to American shaman Durek Verrett, an L.A.-based guru who works with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Selma Blair, and Rosario Dawson. Along with the announcement, which the couple made via Instagram, they also offered a glimpse at the gorgeous engagement ring that Verrett used to propose—one with an extra special meaning.

Verrett spent six months collaborating on with jewelry designer Joy Sangalang Smith of COMMUNION to design the symbolism-filled ring, a spokesperson for the couple told People. It features a 3.5 carat ethically sourced emerald from Brazil, surrounded by diamonds, including four trillion-cut stones to represent earth, air, water and fire. The shield shape of the ring is also a protective emblem, while the infinity detailing on the side and an engraved love knot represent the couple's union.

In addition to symbolizing "unconditional love, strength and resilience of the heart," according to People, the emerald is also a nod to the princess's mother, Queen Sonja, who is a fan of the gem. The ring also includes a trio of diamonds on each side to represent the princess's three daughters, Maud Angelica, Leah Isadora, and Emma Tallulah.

The couple first announced their relationship in May 2019, when the princess wrote on social media, "When you meet your twin flame, you know. I have been lucky enough to have met mine. @shamandurek has changed my life, like he does with so many."
