The Prince and Princess of Wales were photographed out together today for the first time since Princess Kate’s abdominal surgery and subsequent royal drama—and the photo is quite somber. (See here.)

The image show the couple sitting side-by-side in a car while leaving Windsor Castle this afternoon. William wears a dark suit and looks down at his lap, while Kate, also seemingly in a dark ensemble and a tight bun, looks out the window opposite her husband.

To add to the confusion about all the recent events surrounding the family, it seems that while the pair left the castle together today, William is heading to Westminster Abbey for the annual Commonwealth Day service this afternoon, while Kate is reportedly heading to a private appointment.

The photo was taken and shared just hours after Kate apologized in a very rare statement for her editing mishap in a family photo of herself and her kids that the royals released to mark Mother’s Day. “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” Kate wrote. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day.”

A source from Kensington Palace told Bazaar, “This was an amateur, family photograph taken by the Prince of Wales. [They] wanted to offer an informal picture of the family together for Mother’s Day.”

Major news agencies have since retracted the photo after a kill notification released by the AP explained the decision: “At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image. No replacement photo will be sent.”
