While other royal family members were paying their respects at Saturday and Sunday's Remembrance services, Princess Eugenie paid tribute to the somber holiday in her own way.

The Princess posted a simple, heartfelt message on Instagram yesterday to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The image consisted of a sole red poppy, the date (November 11), and the words "lest we forget." Below, she added "We will remember" in a comment.

Although the red flower might not bear particular resonance for American audiences, Eugenie's U.K. followers certainly got the message. Over the past century, the crimson poppy has become a central symbol of WWI in Great Britain, and a way to honor military service.

Inspired by a story-immortalized in a subsequent 1915 poem-wherein fields of poppies mysteriously bloomed in a bloody battle field, a U.K. charity decided to sell handmade poppy pins in support of veterans. Now, a full century after the end of the Great War, Brits still celebrate the end of WWI (called Remembrance Day or Poppy Day) with floral red pins.

The flowers aren't confined to just lapels, either. At the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, plots of green grass were transformed into temporary poppy fields for the 90th year in a row. The memorial garden welcomes families of fallen soldiers to commemorate their loved ones by planting a small cross, topped with a scarlet poppy.

With all of this rich subtext, Princess Eugenie's post was able to communicate all that it needed to with just a few short words.
