Princess Eugenie Will Reportedly Wear a Stella McCartney Wedding Gown Down the Aisle Today
Princess Eugenie is expected to wear a Stella McCartney bridal gown for her wedding at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor this morning.
The British designer-who is known for her uncompromising approach to ethical, eco-conscious and sustainable fashion-was tipped to be a favorite in the early hours of this morning when UK bookmaker Paddy Power closed bets on Stella McCartney after an influx of wagers.
The bride and groom Jack Brooksbank also share McCartney’s eco-conscious values, they aspire to live a plastic-free life and the whole wedding will be plastic-free as well. Eugenie is also an ambassador for Project 0, a charity that works to protect the ocean from single-use plastic pollution.
McCartney was initially believed to be an unlikely choice for Eugenie’s wedding dress, considering the Duchess of Sussex wore a McCartney gown for her wedding reception in May. But after Erdem and Vivienne Westwood confirmed to BAZAAR.com that they were not designing the royal’s gown, McCartney emerged as a more real possibility.
The designer is the daughter of Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and the late animal rights activist Linda McCartney. She was trained at Central Saint Martins and apprenticed under the Savile Row tailor Edward Sexton.
McCartney was creative director of the French fashion house Chloé from 1997 until 2001, leaving to start her own label in partnership with the French luxury conglomerate Kering, which also owns Gucci. She uses no leather or fur, and has pioneered luxurious vegan alternatives in her designs. Her understated, minimal aesthetic is underpinned by impeccable tailoring. Last year McCartney was successful in persuading the entire Kering group to ban the use of fur.
Earlier this year, the Stella McCartney brand split from Kering, with McCartney buying its 50% share in the company.
McCartney has a successful ongoing activewear partnership with Adidas and is also the designer of the British Olympic team's uniforms. Throughout her career McCartney has designed collections of lingerie, childrenswear, ready-to-wear, custom eveningwear and, not surprisingly, bridal.
