Princess Eugenie Opens Up About the Scoliosis Operation She Had as a Child
When Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank on October 12, 2018, the bride deliberately wore a gown that would show the scar she has on her back from a surgery she underwent as a child for scoliosis.
In a new interview with The Telegraph, Princess Eugenie discusses her decision to showcase her scar on her wedding day, and the impact her childhood surgery has had on her life.
The condition, which causes the spine to curve, is thought to occur in approximately 3 out of every 1000 children.
Princess Eugenie underwent surgery for scoliosis when she was just 12 years old. So when she got married earlier this year, the royal opted for a gown which showed the scar on her back. In a new interview with The Telegraph, Princess Eugenie reveals why she values her scar so much, and thinks it's important that people celebrate their own: “I believe scars are like memories that tell a story on your body, that remind you how strong you had to be, and that you survived to talk about it."
Importantly, Eugenie's wedding dress was designed around her scar, so as to create a focus on it: "We realized that the back of the dress was the centre point and a veil would take away from the scar and the beautiful design they had created."
The royal is keen to destroy any stigma associated with the scars that we have on our bodies. As she tells The Telegraph, “Your scars are a way of communicating, and sharing a trauma can be healing in so many ways. It can release that stigma you might have given to yourself and by talking about it you can show people how they can heal, too.”
