On Monday, January 22, Princess Eugenie and her longtime love, Jack Brooksbank, announced that their plans to wed in late 2018, and royal fans everywhere immediately zoomed in on that most important piece of hardware: her stunning engagement ring.

One particular detail that eagle-eyed royals enthusiasts have noticed is that the pink padparadscha sapphire ring has more than a passing resemblance to Eugenie’s mom, Duchess Fergie’s own engagement ring from 1986.

Eugenie’s ring consists of a rare pink-orange stone most commonly found in Sri Lanka, surrounded by tiny diamonds and set in a gold band. The stone is said to be the rarest kind in the sapphire family, and is valued by some gemologists to be worth twice that of Meghan Markle’s impressive sparkler. (“It is a padparadscha sapphire surrounded by 10 brilliant cut diamonds and two pear cut diamonds to give an edge to the standard classic cluster,” Deborah Papas of Prestige Pawnbrokers told The Sun, though she noted that it would be difficult to ascertain the exact value without seeing the stone herself).

Meanwhile, Fergie’s ring, given to her by Eugenie’s father Prince Andrew, consisted of a pink Burma ruby surrounded by diamonds. According to Us Weekly, the stone’s unusual color was reportedly inspired by the Duchess’ bright red hair.

Engagement rings have held major significance within the royal family; Markle’s ring from Prince Harry is a three-stone diamond ring made up of a center stone from the couple’s shared special place, Botswana, flanked by two smaller diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal collection.

A Forevermark diamond expert tells The Knot a few additional details about the stone shape and size. “The center stone looks to be a cushion-shaped diamond of approximately 2.5-3 carats, flanked by two round brilliant diamonds probably about 0.5 carats each,” an expert said. “The classic three-stone silhouette along with the combination of the cushion and round side diamonds and the yellow gold setting give Meghan’s ring a romantic, heirloom feel.”

Princess Eugenie and Brooksbank are set to marry next autumn at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, where Harry and Markle will wed this spring.
