'The Princess Diaries 3' Is In The Works, And The Internet Is Freaking Out

Umm...A third Princess Diaries movie is coming out after a nearly 20 year hiatus, and everyone is *totally* freaking out right now.

The original 2001 film starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, which is based on the novel by Meg Cabot, tells the story of a teen named Mia Thermopolis who lives in San Francisco with her mom. Mia learns she’s not just a dorky nerd trying to make it through high school, but rather heir to the Genovian throne. During the movie, she has to decide whether she wants to live a royal life in the spotlight (and attends lots of fun royal events in the process). Spoiler alert—she says "yes" to the princess life.

A very young Chris Pine joined the cast for the movie's 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which follows Princess Mia after her graduation from Princeton University as she searches for true love (she must marry within 30 days if she’s to be crowned Queen). While the movie ends with Mia convincing parliament that no, she doesn’t need a mans to run the country, Mia and Lord Nicholas Devereaux (a.k.a. Chris Pine), are definitely madly in love, which leaves the possibility of a third movie pretty open.

And while people have pined (pun intended) over the possibility of a third movie for years, it looks like good things come to those who wait. As of Nov. 15, sources have confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that a third movie is coming, and it's going to be a brand-new continuation of the series, rather than a reboot.

Ahead, read up on everything to know about The Princess Diaries 3 so far.

Who will be working on The Princess Diaries 3?

The screenplay will be written by Aadrita Mukerji, who has writing credits on Supergirl, Reacher, and Scorpion, and an additional credit on episodes of New Girl. Just in case you forgot, the iconic first and second movies were written by Gina Wendkos and Shonda Rhimes, respectively.

While the late filmmaker Garry Marshall directed the first two movies, it’s unclear who will be directing the third. But it will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who also produced the first two movies (along with Whitney Houston herself!) and will be executive produced by Melissa Stack, who screen-wrote The Other Woman and Godmothered, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Who will be in the cast for The Princess Diaries 3?

Since the film still seems to be in its *very* early stages, the cast hasn’t been confirmed. Anne Hathaway doesn’t have a deal to return (yet!), The Hollywood Reporter said, but as recently as last month, she stated that she’d support a third movie.

“I would more than entertain it, I'm pulling for it,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.” I, for one, am screaming on the inside.

It’s unclear if Julie Andrews will opt to return to her role as Queen Clarisse right now. “I think it would be too late to do it now,” she told The Hollywood Reporter on June 8. “It’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.

But then, on June 9, she told Entertainment Tonight that she actually doesn't know yet if she will return. “It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful, but if not, there will be other things,” she said.

What about the plot?

Again, no word yet on the plot, but if I know anything about Genovia, it's that there's always some fabulous drama going on, and lots of sweet love stories to be told. And of course, it's bound to err on the comedic side like its predecessors.

When will The Princess Diaries 3 be released?

Since news about the third movie only just broke, it's too early to know, and there’s no confirmation yet about when the movie will actually come out. But for now, I’ll leave you with this:

How much money do the movies make?

Princess Diaries 1 brought in $163.5 million globally, while the The Princess Diaries 2 brought in $134.7 million, per The Hollywood Reporter. Obviously, it's unclear yet how much the third will rake in, but based on the Julie Andrews/Anne Hathaway fan clubs out there, my guess is it'll do just as well as the first two.

I can't wait to see the Princess of Genovia grace the screen once again. Three cheers for Mia!
