Princess Diana's Brother Just Shared A Rare Childhood Photograph of Her

On what would have been Princess Diana's 60th birthday, her sons Prince William and Prince Harry reunited to unveil a statue of her at Kensington Palace. Meanwhile, Diana's brother Charles Spencer celebrated his late sister with a moving tribute online, sharing a rare childhood photograph of Diana.

The beautiful black and white image—taken by Diana's father—was shared via the Twitter and Instagram pages for Althorp House, the Spencer family's stately home. The young Diana is pictured with her hair in pigtails, standing in front of Park House in Norfolk, where she was born.

"Today is the 60th Birthday of Diana, Princess of Wales," reads the caption. "1 July 1961 was an exceptionally hot English summer's day, Diana's parents always remembered. She was born in Park House, on the Queen's Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Park House is seen in the background of this family photograph taken by Diana's father, the 8th Earl Spencer."

This isn't the first time Charles Spencer has shared a nostalgic snapshot of Diana. In November of 2020, he posted a touching photograph of himself as a child, standing next to his older sister who has her arm around him.

Charles has been a staunch defender of his sister since her death, and memorably called on the BBC to open an inquiry into the circumstances of Diana's infamous 1995 Panorama interview. The scathing results of that inquiry, which were publicized last month, noted that Charles Spencer was "deceived and induced" by Bashir to broker a meeting with Diana, and concluded that there had been a "serious breach" of BBC guidelines.

During the unveiling of the statue of Diana today, Harry and William released a statement discussing what it means to them both. "Today, on what would have been our Mother’s 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character—qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better," they said. "Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy."
