Princess Diana once sought advice from photographer Anwar Hussein about the experience of interfaith marriage. Hussein, who had a close working relationship with Diana and has since gone on to chronicle her life in a brand new "walk-through documentary," discussed the encounter in a new interview with People.

Hussein told the magazine that Diana approached him on a flight during the 1990s. "All the lights were dimmed on the flight, and she came and whispered, 'Can I have a chat?'", he described. "She knew that I was married to an English girl, Caroline. She wanted to know about Islam. She was asking about being married when one person is Muslim and another is Protestant."

At that time, Diana was in a relationship with Dr. Hasnat Khan, a Pakistani heart surgeon and practicing Muslim. Per Vanity Fair, the pair were deeply in love, and Diana once described Khan as "the one person who will never sell me out." Diana didn't mention Khan by name during her conversation with Hussein, but he made the connection.

"She was interested because of what she was going through with Dr. Hasnat Khan," Hussein said. "She didn't mention him, but she assumed I knew it. I think she was wondering how the family would react to him and things like that."

Hussein's new project, Princess Diana: Accredited Access, is described as the world's first walk-through documentary and chronicles Diana's journey from a shy young woman to an influential global icon. It's currently open in Chicago and Los Angeles, and will open in New York later this year.

"I saw every side of Diana," Hussein said of his longtime working relationship with the princess. "She was a genuine, good human being."
