A Princess Diana Musical Is Coming to Netflix

Before the coronavirus pandemic shut down Broadway, a Princess Diana musical was in previews and set to open officially on March 31.

Telling the story of Diana's “ill-fated romance” with Prince Charles, Diana: A True Musical Story has since been halted indefinitely along with the entire New York theater community. However, perhaps thanks to the successful release of Hamilton on Disney+, the historical musical has found a new home on Netflix in 2021.

"We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn’t be more excited to finally be able to share our show with theater lovers everywhere," Diana's producers said in a joint statement, per People. "Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide."

Broadway actor Jeanna de Waal, who stars as Princess Diana, told People she spent hours watching YouTube videos of the British icon, “devouring”  interviews and clips of the princess with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

"She’s not speaking, but you can see the way that she’s caring for Harry and William, and how she relates to them. How she watches so intensely,” the actor said. "She doesn’t seem distracted by anything. She’s very present in every single moment that she’s involved with." Diana: A True Musical Story also stars two-time Tony Award–winning actor Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, and Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles.

Of course, Diana: A True Musical Story is not the only historical drama about the beloved royal we have to look forward to in the near(ish) future. Back in June it was announced that Kristen Stewart is set to star as Lady Di in the new Pablo Larraín–directed drama Spencer. Larraín has a pretty good track record, particularly due to his work on Jackie, the 2016 Jackie Kennedy biopic starring Natalie Portman.

According to Deadline, this film “covers a critical weekend in the early ’90s, when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working, and that she needed to veer from a path that put her in line to one day be queen." The drama will unfold over the course of three days “in one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor” and will not wade into Princess Diana’s death in 1997. Instead, Spencer will focus more on her relationship with Prince Charles and her sons.

Production for Spencer is set to begin in 2021, so we'll just have to warm up with Diana: A True Musical Story first.
