Luckily for anyone interested in getting to know Charles, the author and podcaster is opening about his own struggles and long-lived trauma in his new book A Very Private School: A Memoir.
According to the description, Charles’ upcoming book tells “a clear-eyed, first-hand account of a culture of cruelty at the school Charles Spencer attended in his youth and provides important insights into an antiquated boarding system.” The blurb continues, “Drawing on the memories of many of his schoolboy contemporaries, as well as his own letters and diaries from the time, he reflects on the hopelessness and abandonment he felt at aged eight, viscerally describing the intense pain of homesickness and the appalling inescapability of it all.”

In his announcement of the book, which is available for pre-order, his followers poured in support for the memoir, and related to his troubling years. “That poor little 8 yr old boy,” wrote one commenter about the book’s cover which has a young Charles with his bags packed. “Dear God. I cannot imagine. Way too young to be separated from your family & sent to boarding school.” “It will be a stunning read,” another commenter stated. “Those were different times, I suspect.”
Following the announcement of the book, Charles’ wife, Karen Spencer, shared with her followers how excited she was to have her husband’s story out in the world.
“I can’t even begin to express how proud I am of him for writing this book,” she said in the caption on Instagram alongside the book’s cover. “It was hard even watching him write it. Reliving it in order to write it and connecting with his contemporaries who shared the experience and living their trauma has made for a very challenging 5 years.”
“But it’s worth it,” she reflected. “This is a story that needs to be told, and there is no one better to tell it. His history-author brain, obsessive with detail and facts, his ability to put the whole madness of sending children away at 8 into a historic context, and his painfully beautiful writing combine so wonderfully to make this difficult subject absolutely riveting. It’s his story, the story of those who lived it with him and sadly the story of so many others. This common trauma, experienced by so many in positions of power and authority, can’t help but have had an impact on eyeryone who lives in the UK or within the countries touched by its Empire.
