Princess Diana Was Allegedly Shown a Fake Abortion “Receipt” Amid Concern Charles Was Having an Affair

Panorama host Martin Bashir allegedly showed Princess Diana a fake abortion “receipt” for her nanny, Tiggy Legge-Bourke, in an unethical attempt to get her on his show. According to the Daily Mail (via People), Diana believed that Prince Charles was having an affair with Tiggy and was suspicious she’d become pregnant with Charles’s baby. The Daily Mail reports that an investigation into the matter was launched by the Queen’s private secretary (and Diana’s brother-in-law), Sir Robert Fellowes.

This disturbing news appears to have been unearthed during an independent investigation into Diana’s 1995 interview with Bashir, who — according to a Sunday Times report — also created fake bank statements to manipulate Diana’s brother into helping negotiate the interview.

Retired Supreme Court Judge Lord Dyson is conducting the investigation and has reportedly interviewed 17 witnesses. His findings will be published in the next few months, and sources tell the Daily Mail they include evidence that Diana changed her mind about the interview days before filming — and that the fake abortion “receipt” helped convince her to go through with it.

Prince William released a rare public statement about the interview in November 2020, saying, “The independent investigation is a step in the right direction. It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and subsequent decisions taken by those in the BBC at the time.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the BBC told People that “Martin won’t be making any public comments while the investigation’s ongoing. The BBC has no comment to make on this.”
