More than a year after she first returned to Monaco after a prolonged health issue, Princess Charlene is speaking out about her wellbeing. At a palace event this week in honor of the tenth anniversary of her foundation, which promotes childhood swim classes—the princess herself is a former Olympic swimmer—Charlene took a moment to discuss her health struggles.

"I would first like to say that I feel so much better today than I have in recent years," she told the publication Monaco Matin. “I feel less pain and much more energy. I continue to recover, to rebalance myself. It will still take time, but I'm happy." She added, "My family and those I love are my rock. I approach the future, step by step, one day at a time."

The troubles appear to have started in May 2021, when Charlene flew to her native South Africa for a short trip to support her charitable work. However, a series of health issues, reportedly related to an ear, nose, and throat problem, prevented her from being able to fly, and thus return home. Ultimately the princess spent over six month away from her husband, Prince Albert, and twin children Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, before she was able to return to Monaco last fall.

That wasn't the end of the saga, however, as shortly after her return to the principality, it was announced that Charlene would be stepping back once again to receive treatment for exhaustion at a Swiss clinic. Charlene only began to return to public duties earlier this year, when she joined her family for the opening of Monaco's famed race season.

During this week's event, Charlene also spoke about her 8-year-old children's roles in the royal family.

"With my husband, when we have to go to an event, we explain to them what the nature of this event, this ceremony is," she said. "They like accompanying us, and with the Prince, the four of us enjoy doing these together. But as I said, they are still young, they continue to observe, to learn, before it will become natural for them."

She added, "Our children were very enthusiastic to take part in this National Day and we were very proud to see their maturity. The family unit is essential for us."
