'The Princess Bride' Is Being Made into a Musical
It's still in the early stages, but The Princess Bride may soon come to the stage.
Disney Theatrical Productions has brought on a trio of Broadway alums-two of whom boast Tony Awards-to pen a musical adaptation of the beloved story. David Yazbek (The Band's Visit, the upcoming Tootsie) will write the score, while Bob Martin (The Prom) and Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) will handle the book.
There have been previous efforts to bring The Princess Bride to the stage, but none have quite come together. William Goldman, the writer behind both the original book and the 1987 movie adaptation, was at one time working with Adam Guettel (The Light in the Piazza, To Kill a Mockingbird) on a Princess Bride musical, but their collaboration fell apart in 2007. Goldman has since passed away, in November of 2018.
Still, Disney's hopes of a Princess Bride musical haven't faded. In 2013, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn-who was involved in the screen adaptation-reaffirmed his desire to realize the show. "My involvement in The Princess Bride goes back to 1987 and it has always been close to my heart," Horn said, per the Hollywood Reporter. "For all those years and a few more, I’ve been friends with the brilliant Bill Goldman, and to now have a stage production of this film in development at Disney is honestly a dream come true."
With a powerful executive's backing, bringing Princess Bride to the stage may be a little less... inconceivable.
