To celebrate Princess Charlotte's seventh birthday, Kate Middleton and Prince William released three adorable new photos of their daughter. In one of them, Charlotte smiles with the family's dog, a black cocker spaniel who made his royal photograph debut.

The dog's name was revealed in the official image caption, which read, "Princess Charlotte whose seventh birthday is on Monday, with cocker spaniel Orla, taken by her mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, in Norfolk, at the weekend."

Orla is a name of Celtic origin that translates to "golden princess." According to Dublin Live, Orla comes from "the traditional Irish spelling Órlaith, [which] comes from Órfhlaith—which means 'golden princess' as it combines 'ór' meaning gold with 'fhlaith' meaning prince, its full feminine form being 'banfhlaith.'"

Orla is Will and Kate's second dog; their first, Lupo, was an English cocker spaniel who passed away last year. The Cambridges announced the news on social media, writing, "Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much," the royal couple wrote on social media at the time, signing the post "W & C."

The Cambridges brought Orla home shortly before Lupo passed away. "They were devastated when Lupo passed away," a source told the Daily Mail in January 2021. "It was hoped that a younger dog would give Lupo some company and give him a little more life and energy."

Orla is a puppy raised by Kate's brother, James Middleton. James announced his dog Luna, Lupo's sister, had welcomed "six healthy little pups" in spring 2020.

"I am sad to see you go, and yes I might cry but it will be with happiness as each of your new homes are bursting with love," James wrote to the puppies. "You might be scared at first, thats ok. Just be yourself and you will never understand how much happiness you will bring to your new families and all the people you meet."
