This time last year, Prince Harry was everywhere as his autobiography Spare revealed a string of genuinely staggering revelations about royal life. But now, another book is in the spotlight which has shed more light on events from the royal family’s perspective and also revealed that neither Prince William nor Kate have read Spare.

Naturally, the world wanted to hear Prince William's thoughts on Spare,” author Robert Hardman wrote in an extract adapted from his book The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy serialized in the Daily Mail and on Mail Online this week. “His staff remain adamant that he and the Princess refused to open a book which has caused so much pain.” Hardman quotes a senior advise as saying that “neither of them read it” but that William, who has the BBC app on his phone, saw news about it, and aides gave the couple “key points.”

Claims that William chose not to read his brother’s autobiography in full for himself might be surprising to some. However, far less surprising is the information also outlined by Hardman that the Prince of Wales was “mortified by the casual betrayal of so many fraternal secrets.”

The royal family chose to stay silent this time last year and have never responded to the claims in Spare, or the claims made by Harry and Meghan in their Netflix documentary. However, this latest book by a royal author who is known for his excellent access and contacts, is the best insight yet into the royal family’s perspective on the Sussexes.

One of the revelations in the book that has caught people’s attention are claims that an aide said Queen Elizabeth was “as angry as I’d ever seen her” after Harry and Meghan said she had given her blessing to their daughter being called Lilibet after her childhood nickname. After the name was announced in June 2021, a spokesperson for the couple told media outlets that the Queen was supportive of the use of the name Lilibet after the BBC reported that she was not consulted over the choice.
